The Write Stuff: Crafting Quality College Admissions Essays
    • Session 1: June 2 - 13: 9 AM - 12 PM, with a short break for snacks & mind-clearing
    • Session 2: June 16 - 27: 9 AM - 12 PM, with a short break for snacks & mind-clearing (closed 6/19)
    Overview:
Fewer and fewer colleges and universities are offering in-person interviews. So how do you show them that they need to offer you admission to their institution of higher learning? By writing a superior application essay (or several)! In many cases, these writings will be your only opportunity to present yourself to admissions officers/readers, so you want to use the limited number of words you are allowed to put your best self forward.

Together we will discuss and analyze both excellent and not-so-excellent examples of responses to frequently used prompts; engage in mini-workshops about such things as word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure; and ultimately write several essays in response to an assortment of prompts from the Common App, private colleges, and even some “wild card” writing that will stretch your talents. Peer editing will also play a major role in this class, as we can always learn from each other. There will be homework/writing each night, and I will be making suggestions on your writing on a daily basis outside of class.

Cost per Student Session One: $1,000
Cost per Student Session Two: $  900

    Limits:
Grade levels: Rising 11th and 12th graders, and rising 10th graders only with permission
10 students per session - priority given to students closer to beginning the college application process.

    Instructor:
Wendy Schapiro has a BA in Education from Brown University and MEds from Harvard Graduate School of Education and Lesley University. She has been a classroom teacher and tutor for nearly 41 years, most recently enjoying the last three years at Palm Valley School. Wendy has successfully worked with college applicants, both domestically and internationally, who have statistically been admitted to their first- and/or second-choice colleges. When she is not  reading and editing her students' writing, Wendy likes to cook and play with her cats (but not at the same time).

    Creative Coding Bootcamp
    Overview:
An introduction to Javascript programming with an emphasis on creative and interactive applications. Students will learn the fundamental skills needed to write code, creating dynamic programs involving animation, mouse and keyboard input, image and video manipulation, physics simulation, and generative art.

    Session runs from June 2-27 - 9 AM - 12 PM.

    Cost per Student: $1,200

    Limits:
Grade levels: 6-12 - No prerequisite. Minimum students: 4; Maximum students: 25

    Conversational Spanish
    Overview:
This course will enable students to understand even more complex conversations as well as to increase their fluency.  The curriculum is designed so that students can enhance their speaking skills in Spanish and become more confident. The topics will cover daily situations that we experience when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country from going shopping, ordering food, and getting around the city to exploring different sites and surviving as an exchange student in a Spanish-speaking city on a limited budget.

Session runs from June 2-27 - 9-12 PM

    Cost per Student: $1,200

    Limits:
Grade levels: 8-12 - Class is open to 8 students maximum; Prerequisite - 2 years of Spanish
