What is the meaning and purpose of an independent school education?
As the leader of the only independent school in the Coachella Valley, I am often asked about the meaning and purpose behind an education at an independent school. In fact, I get that question a lot both from inside and outside our school community. First, let’s take a look at what defines an independent school. Then we will amplify the purpose and goals that undergird an independent school education.
We will begin by characterizing schools according to their funding models. Most every school that serves students prior to college age is financed either through public or private funding. Public and charter schools are funded via the US government. Schools that receive little or no government funding are referred to as ‘private’ schools. Many private schools have a faith component to them. While some private schools adhere to a particular methodology of education (like Montessori). Some private schools are for-profit schools meaning that they are owned by an individual or a corporation.
Independent schools are private schools that do not fall into any of those categories. They are not tethered to a particular faith or instructional methodology and are not owned privately by an individual or corporation. They are, as the word suggests, private. They exist solely for and are financially supported by the families that they serve. The vast majority of independent schools are non-profits and are governed by the rules and regulations that are typical of the non-profit space.
Palm Valley Schol is a non-profit, independent school that is led by a Board of Trustees. The trustees are volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure the success of the school and to provide the best possible education for its students.
Though independent in nature, there are both statewide and national associations of schools that are similarly structured. Palm Valley School is a member of and accredited in part by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS, https://www.caisca.org/) and its national affiliate, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS, https://www.nais.org/). An independent school education often aims to provide a unique and flexible approach to learning that may differ from what’s found in public or other private schools. Palm Valley School is an accredited educational institution accredited through a joint partnership between the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC, https://www.acswasc.org/) and CAIS. Palm Valley School completed a full accreditation process and is accredited through June 2031.
At Palm Valley School, our distinguishing college preparatory curriculum, coupled with unique and diverse programmatic and extra-curricular offerings, serve to grow our students academically, athletically, and personally. This is all done on a beautiful, safe 34-acre campus in Rancho Mirage. We offer education to Toddlers (18 months old) through High School.

Palm Valley Private School occupies 34 acres in Rancho Mirage with stunning mountain views. The campus features separate campuses and buildings for each of our four divisions – Preschool (ages 18 months to 5), Elementary (Grades K-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and High School (Grades 9-12), along with a full-size gymnasium, several separate recesses and athletic fields, a black box theater and smart lab.
